LG announces its first smartphone processor “Nuclun”

Korean smartphone maker LG on Friday unveiled its first smartphone processor in the form of Nuclun. Based on ARM’s big.LITTLE technology, LG Nuclun is an octa-core processor, which houses four 1.5GHz Cortex-A15 cores and four 1.2GHz Cortex-A7 cores. It also supports 4G LTE Cat 6 connectivity.

According to LG, Nuclun supports Heterogeneous processing, thus it can adjust the number of performing cores based on the requirements of the task for maximum processing power or maximum energy savings.

“Nuclun opens up a new chapter in LG’s history of innovation in the mobile industry. With this in-house solution, we will be able to achieve better vertical integration and further diversity our product strategy against stronger competition. Nuclun will give us greater flexibility in our mobile strategy going forward,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.

LG has announced that its G Watch R

LG has announced that its G Watch R will begin retailing in the European markets starting early-November. This Moto 360 competitor will be first released in the countries such as France, UK, Italy and Spain, followed by other markets in Europe, North America, Asia and CIS region.  The company has also stated that the consumers in select countries will be able to grab the LG G Watch R from Google Play like G Watch and Samsung Gear Live.

Originally introduced at IFA trade fair in September, G Watch R features a round plastic OLED display of 1.3-inch diameter, 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage and dust/ water resistance. The smartwatch runs on Android Wear. As you can see, most of the specifications of the G Watch R are same as G Watch.

The LG G3 is probably going to be joined by the LG G Pro 2

The LG G3 is probably going to be joined by the LG G Pro 2 since both are the company's flagships as of now. However, we suspect more devices will be blessed with Android 5.0 Lollipop goodness such as the LG G3 S, G3 Stylus, G2 and the mid-range L90 and L70.

We don't know yet how LG plans to alter its most recent Optimus UI to better suit the new spirit of Android. The company likes to add a lot of additional features, so it'll be interesting to see how it manages to incorporate them in a hopefully clean and useful fashion.

Motorola, Sony and HTC have already compiled a list of devices that are planned to receive the latest Android version.

Work with HUAWEI and its goodbye from us, U.S firms tell U.K partners

UK companies are being warned by US partners not to cosy up to Huawei or ZTE due to ongoing worries at government level on the other side of the pond over the two Chinese companies.

The CEOs of two telecoms companies based in Cambridge admitted that US partners indicated that if they start to work together with Huawei or ZTE then they would have no choice but to abandon partnerships with the UK-based companies involved.

“Our American customers have made it clear to us that we cannot deal with Huawei or ZTE if we want to keep dealing with them – full stop,” one CEO, who wished to remain anonymous, told Business Weekly.

Another CEO added that its “partners in the States have no choice because of their government’s intransigence,” and they have been told “if it’s Huawei it’s the highway for you.”


Huawei has been plunging cash into the UK’s Internet of Things [IoT] sector in recent years including a new £125 milion chip and R&D lab in Bristol, £1.3 billion in investment across the country and the $25 million [£15 million] acquisition of Cambridge-based Neul.

As part of that acquisition Huawei has committed to constructing an IoT “centre of excellence” in the city and Neul’s “weightless” technology will be at the centre of this.

The US, however, is incredibly wary of Huawei and its counterpart ZTE and the two are banned from tendering for US government contracts due to worries over spying and espionage – something the Chinese businesses have been at pains to deny.

Europe has also expressed misgivings about state aid being used by China to assist Huawei and it has only just come to an agreement with the country’s government over what subsidies can be provided to the companies, which are heavily involved in Europe.

US misgivings over Huawei won’t slow its expansion in the UK and it remains to be seen whether UK companies choose to work with the Chinese firm instead of their current US partners.

XOLO is all set to release a new budget Android smartphone in the form of XOLO One

XOLO is all set to release a new budget Android smartphone in the form of XOLO One. The new smartphone has been listed on the company website and is expected to go on sale in the next few days. It will retail for INR 6,599, revealed the XOLO website.

XOLO One features a 4.5-inch FWVGA (854x480p) IPS display, 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6582M processor, 1GB of RAM and 1700 mAh battery. The phone also packs 5MP rear camera, VGA front camera, Android 4.4.2, 3G and dual-SIM support.  In addition, XOLO has included 8GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS on the phone.

On the design front, the company has included leather finish on the back of the XOLO One and will be offering the phone in White, Brown, Black and Red colour options. XOLO notes that One will be upgradable to Android 5.0 but has not given any timeframe.

When Google first talked about Android Auto, Wear and TV at the I/O 2014 developer conference back in June year, an interesting tidbit came to light that the search giant isn’t going to allow the manufacturers to customize the interface as per their liking in the new platforms. Now, Google’s VP of engineering Hiroshi Lockheimer has revealed to Re/Code that the customization norms for Android Auto, TV and Wear are not permanent and the manufacturers will eventually get to tweak certain aspects of these platforms.

“It’s not some Google-way-or-the-highway kind of thing. We’re trying to find the right balance of differentiation and customization” Lockheimer told the publication. According to him, “Google wanted a bit of time to make sure it had the basics right in these new areas before allowing deeper customization of the software experience,” writes Re/Code in its report.

Lenovo has launched the 8 and 10-inch versions of theYoga Tablet 2 and the 13.3-inch Yoga Tablet 2 Pro

After unveiling the tablets in the UK last week, Lenovo has launched the 8 and 10-inch versions of theYoga Tablet 2 and the 13.3-inch Yoga Tablet 2 Pro in India. Set to be available exclusively on Flipkart, the 8-inch Yoga Tablet 2 is set to go on sale starting October 17 for Rs. 20,999 ($340), followed by the launch of the 10-inch Yoga Tablet 2 mid-November for Rs. 28,990 ($470) and the Yoga Tablet 2 Pro by the end of November for Rs. 47,990 ($780).

As far as hardware specs are concerned, the 8-inch and 10-inch Yoga Tablet 2 feature displays with resolution of 1920 x 1200, quad-core Intel Atom Z3745 CPU that can be clocked up to 1.86 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage, microSD card slot, 8 MP camera at the back, 1.6 MP shooter at the front along with Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n and 3G connectivity. On the software side of things, the tablets feature Android 4.4 KitKat.

The Yoga Tablet 2 Pro shares most of the specs of the Yoga Tablet 2, but comes with a higher resolution 2560 x 1440 display as well as 32 GB internal memory. The tablet also comes with an integrated projector which Lenovo says will create a 50-inch "home theater experience" on any flat surface.

All three models are geared toward media consumption, and as such feature front stereo speaks and a hinge that allows you to hold either tablet in various configurations thanks to a fold out kickstand.

Alibaba's Yun OS code adopted by Meizu as Flyme OS base

Chinese internet giant Alibaba and Zhuhai-based Meizu Technology are set to announce a new system for mobile phones which will adopt Alibaba's Yun OS 3.0–set to be released Oct. 20–as the base code for Meizu's Flyme OS on Oct. 21, reports Beijing-based news agency Caixin Online.

It has been widely reported that Alibaba approached Meizu several times with the intention to invest in the firm, but Meizu was resistant to Alibaba's attempt to take control of the firm's operations.

After the news that Alibaba would not invest in the company, Meizu's vice CEO Li Nan disclosed that Meizu would continue its collaboration with Alibaba on the mobile phone system.

Just as Alibaba started to promote the Yun OS 3.0 however, a war of words broke out on Sina Weibo–China's equivalent of Twitter–between Meizu's founder and CEO J. Wong and Alibaba's chief technology officer Wang Jian, which concluded with Wang on Oct. 12 betting 10 million yuan (US$1.6 million) that the Yun OS was just as good as the Flyme OS.

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note 4 smartphone for the Indian market

Right on cue, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note 4 smartphone for the Indian market at a press event in New Delhi today. This new phablet flagship from Samsung will be joining the company’s Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Alpha smartphones in the top-end smartphone portfolio.

Sporting the Note-series specific S-Pen, Samsung Galaxy Note 4 was originally introduced at IFA trade fair in Berlin last month. Huawei unveils Honor Holly for INR 6,999 in India

After first showcasing the Honor Holly smartphone at the Honor 6 launch, Chinese smartphone maker Huawei on Tuesday officially introduced the phone for the Indian market. Part of the entry-level segment, the new Honor Holly has been priced at INR 6,999 and will go on sale beginning October 16.

Like other Honor-series devices, Holly will also exclusively retail at Flipkart.com.

Coming to the specifications, Huawei Holly features a 5-inch 720p HD display, 1.3GHz quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM. The phone also comes with 8MP rear camera, 2MP front shooter and 2000 mAh battery.

In addition, Huawei has included 3G connectivity, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of on-board storage, and dual-SIM support on Holly. On the software front, the phone runs on Android 4.4.2 with Emotion UI.

At the given price-tag, the Huawei Holly will be competing with the likes of Xiaomi Redmi 1S, Asus Zenfone 4.5, Moto E and the Android One smartphones.

Lenovo announces Yoga Tablet 2 Pro 13.3" QHD Android tablet

At a global launch event yesterday, Lenovo announced the Yoga Tablet 2 Pro. The tablet runs Android and packs a 13.3" QHD display, but that's not even the coolest thing about it. In fact, the Tablet 2 Pro comes with an integrated projector, which allows you to beam the slate's display on up to 50" surface.

Moreover, the Tablet 2 Pro comes with a 5W JBL subwoofer and two 1.5W front-facing speakers. This makes up for an 8W surround sound system, which promises to be quite good. The slate's battery is good enough for 15 hours of usage on a single charge, but no more specifics are available at this point. All of these neat features have made the tablet quite heavy at 950 grams.

Since this is the latest slate in the Yoga family, it comes with cool stand allowing it for different viewing modes. In addition to the old Stand, Tilt and Hold, there's a new Hang mode which lets you hang the tablet on a wall, for instance.

Under the hood of the tablet operates a quad-core Intel Atom Z3745 processor and 2GB of RAM. Internal storage is 32GB, while the microSD card slot allows for additional expansion of up to 64GB.
